Alleluja (1999-2000) goes back to a project I had planned for the turn of the millennium. Since my home town is located in a narrow valley surrounded by mountains, this seemed to me the ideal place for a huge sound installation. I had the idea of setting up towers of loudspeakers on three rocks on the mountains around the centre of the town and a central tower on the market place. Unfortunately this project couldn’t be realized in the end.

Since I had already started to develop sound materials for this project, I decided to make an acousmatic piece from these materials which are mainly based on two sources: sounds I had recorded from the bells of the St Amandus Church and a Gregorian Alleluja. Using this chant from the origins of Occidental music and transforming it into contemporary music, I wanted to mark the time span of Occidental music - a period of incredible musical creativity and output. Not least, as an exclamation of joy "Alleluja" also wants to welcome both the new millennium and my son Ilmar, born on September 26th, 2000, to whom this piece is dedicated.

Alleluja (1999/ 2000) geht auf ein Projekt zurück, das ich für die Jahrtausendwende geplant hatte. Da meine Heimatstadt Bad Urach in einem engen Tal liegt und von Bergen umgeben ist, erschien mir das als der ideale Platz für eine größere Klanginstallation. Ich hatte die Idee, Lautsprechertürme auf den Felsen der Berge um das Stadtzentrum herum zu errichten und einen zentralen Turm auf dem Marktplatz. Leider konnte das Projekt letztendlich nicht realisiert werden.

Da ich bereits mit der Entwicklung von Klangmaterialien für dieses Projekt begonnen hatte, beschloss ich, aus diesem Material ein akusmatisches Stück zu machen. Diese Klangmaterialien beruhen auf zwei Quellen: zum einen auf den Glockenklängen der Bad Uracher St. Amandus-Kirche, zum anderen auf einem gregorianischen Alleluja. Die Verwendung dieses Gesangs von den Anfängen der abendländischen Musik und seine elektronischen Transformationen in eine gegenwärtige Klangwelt markiert gewissermaßen die Zeitspanne der abendländischen Musik - einer Epoche von unglaublicher Kreativität. Nicht zuletzt will dieses Stück - Alleluja als Ausruf der Freude - sowohl das neue Jahrtausend als auch meinen Sohn Ilmar willkommen heißen, der am 26.September 2000 geboren wurde und dem dieses Stück gewidmet ist.
