Douglas Schmidt and John Oliver present a haunting brilliant sonic interpretational response in the early days of the Russian invasion of the Ukraine. The album feels both improvised and very intentional at the same time. I'll be featuring this album on my Feb.28 show, playing artists from the Ukraine as well as those compelled to create music from this senseless violence, on CJAM 99.1 FM Windsor, Canada CJAM.ca 13:00-14:30 EST.

Squid in Chains first release, a fresh new mix and mastering of the original recording released as an independent album on John Oliver's bandcamp page in March 2022.
A statement from the band about the music: "This is our response to the current situation in Ukraine. We recorded this music between February 23rd and 24th, the night of the invasion. We had no idea how prescient this was. There is mourning in this music, weeping, crying, longing for peace.
As improvising musicians, we live and breathe and reflect the world around us. All music recorded in one take."

Somehow this one seems more abstract than the previous MC comps, maybe relying more on textures, moods and space than, say, melody. There is melody, of course, sorry my thoughts aren't concise. In any event, with Mystery Circles you can always expect a finely curated selection of tracks that will have you adding to your favorite new artists to follow. No track here is over 4 minutes! Actually, the longest two tracks clock in at 3:39. Impressive.
